Output devices. (Multimedia Source Guide supplement to T.H.E. Journal): An article from: T H E Journal (Technological Horizons In Education)

From the supplier: Output devices are necessary to provide a hard copy version of multimedia presentations. Full-color printers are now available at reasonable prices due to the advances in printer technology. Ink-jet printers are the least expensive but offer problematic resolution levels. Thermal-wax-transfer printers offer a professional level of graphics quality, about 300 dots-per-inch (dpi), for a medium price, and have become the most widely-employed output system. Higher quality continuous-tone printing is performed either by laser printer or by the costlier dye-sublimation printer, which provides the closest thing to photo-realistic quality. Video printers, on the other hand, are able to produce hard copy from the video source itself, whether NTSC, S-VHS or RGB. These units can be purchased for as little as $2,000. A list of vendors and products is included.

The ultra-versatile PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One delivers spectacular performance for the home and small office. It produces an amazing print resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi, for superb detail and clarity. To achieve this, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a next-generation 3, 584-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 1 picoliter, for smooth, virtually grain-free images. The ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system-four dye based inks and a pigment-based black-ink-produces true-life photos along with laser-quality text. Or, you can print directly from your PictBridge ready digital camera or DV camcorder. With direct printing, you don’t need a computer. This high-end office All-In-One does it all. The auto duplex Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) can read both sides of a 2 sided document, letting you copy or scan a 2-sided original without having to flip it over by hand! The ADF can hold 35 pages of originals at one time, making it much easier to copy, scan or fax multi-page documents. And when combined with the unit’s dual paper trays, the ADF gives you the capability for high-capacity copying, even of 2 sided originals. The AE (Auto Exposure) Copy feature automatically optimizes reproduction quality based on the type of original you’re duplicating. When scanning, the unit’s high-resolution CCD technology enables you to produce exceptional 2400-dpi scans, with vibrant 48-bit color depth. And now, faxing: with the PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One, you can achieve up to Super G3 fax speed in color and B&W. Plus, the expanded memory lets you store 100 speed dial codes, and receive up to 250 incoming pages.
Customer Review: One great printer!
I have never written a review before, but I can tell you that this is one great printer. It is simple to set-up and quite easy to use. It has all the features I need and the output is significantly better that the Lexmark and HP printers I had previously. My old HP printer did a good job of printing but the paper never went in strait. I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a good all in one printer.
Customer Review: INK USAGE!!! READ THIS IT HELPS!!!
I have had this printer for about 2yrs now and love it. The biggest issue was with the Ink Consumption, which I figured out pretty quickly. Here is some info from Canon on how to make sure you printer is only using black in to print text and not color ink as well….

Try this link or follow instruction below…

Issue: How do I print using only the black ink and not the other colors?

——————————————————————————–
Solution: Print using black ink only (Windows)

Print using pigment black ink only (Windows)
Instructions to print using only the pigment black ink tank only. Occasionally you may need to print using black ink only. Using grayscale alone does not provide this option and the color inks will still be used. By following this procedure you may print using only the pigment black ink tank.
Note: Image quality may be sacrificed when printing photographs.

Open the Properties / Preferences window for the printer.

For Windows Vista
Click / Select ‘Start’ from the bottom left of the Windows screen, ‘Control Panel’, ‘Hardware and Sound’, and then click on ‘Printers’. Note: If you are in ‘Classic’ view, Click ‘Printers’ directly from the ‘Control Panel’.
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select ‘Properties’ from the menu that appears.

For Windows XP Home Edition

Click / Select ‘Start’ from the bottom left of the Windows screen, ‘Control Panel,’ ‘Printers and Other Hardware,’ and ‘Printers and Faxes.’
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select ‘Properties’ from the menu that appears.

For Windows XP Professional Edition

Click ‘Start’ from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and ‘Printers and Faxes.’
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select ‘Properties’ from the menu that appears.

For Windows 2000/Me/98

Click / Select ‘Start’ from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and ‘Settings,’ then ‘Printers.’
Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select ‘Properties’ from the menu that appears.

Click on the Main tab.

Select ‘Plain Paper’ as the Media Type. If any other paper type is selected, color ink will be used to create black.

Note: The pigment black ink will only be used when printing on plain paper.

Select the box for ‘Grayscale Printing’. If the document to be printed is in black only, then this step may be skipped.

Note: If either ‘Borderless Printing’ or ‘Duplex Printing’ are enabled from the Page Setup tab, grayscale will be created using a combination of the color (dye) inks to prevent smearing.

Click ‘OK’ to save the changes.
The printer will now only use the pigment black ink tank.

Laptop Speakers - USB, Portable, Compact, Travel Speaker for PC and Mac - B-Flex 2 Hi-Fi Stereo USB Speaker (White)

The stylish B-Flex is a compact stereo speaker with a USB flex cable. Easy to use, great for enjoying mp3’s and DVD’s, perfect for laptops and desktops!
Customer Review: Pretty incredible sound quality
I bought these after reading all of the positive reviews and they lived up to the hype. I have a macbook and the b-flex really blows the stock speakers away. Now I can watch movies on my laptop without headphones. This is a really cool product if you want sound on the go and dont want to setup big clunky speakers.
Customer Review: IF YOU CAN’T HEAR YOUR LAPTOP SPEAKER GET ONE OF THESE!
SOLVED MY PROBLEM TO A ‘T’. WOULD HAVE RATED IT 5 STARS IF THEY SUPPLIED A LITTLE LEG TO SNAP ONTO THE BOTTOM OF THE FLEX WIRE TO KEEP IT FROM STRESSING THE USB PORT. WOULD HAVE RATED IT 10 STARS HAD THEY PUT AN ON/OFF VOLUME CONTROL ON IT! “BUY NOW”

Customer Review: Not very impressed
I have owned this printer for 5 months now, so thought I would write my review now that I have had some experience with it. On the plus side, it does print, copy, fax, scan etc. (most of the time) And actually handles envelopes pretty nicely. But overall, I have not been very impressed. If you print more than about 5 pages, everything starts to get all wadded up in the receiving tray or ends up on the floor. This is really irritating. When trying to scan more than about 10 pages at a time, it locks up and has to be rebooted. I think this may be software related, but that’s another issue. The ScanSoft paperport software that comes with the printer is pretty useless. It’s a very old version, and not very stable. And sometimes the printer just goes off into it’s own world and I have to turn the power off and back on to get it to work again. It shows up as available and online, but won’t print anything I send to it. So, overall I have not been very impressed with this printer. I guess you get what you pay for. I have owned other Multi-Function printers which performed much better. Thought I would save some money this time and try this one. Wish I hadn’t now.
Customer Review: Good printer for price but rips you off on toner cartridges
For the first 2000 or so pages I was very pleased with the printer. It is a little loud and tends to throw paper all over the place on larger print jobs. But overall it performed well considering the cheap price tag.

However, at a little over 2000 pages the printer just stopped half way through my current print job. A message indicating the toner was low appeared. I tried to get it to finish the print job but the stupid thing refused. It was an important print job that I needed to turn in in a couple hours and I had no spare toner cartridge.

Finally after much frustration and after almost destroying the cartridge trying to shake the toner to the front to try to finish the current job I discovered a way to circumvent the low toner “feature”. I placed some tape over the little laser “eye” on either side of the toner cartridge. After that I was able to not only finish the current job but print hundreds more pages without any fading. I’ve gone through another 500 page package and still have not replaced the cartridge.

If brother included this “feature” to sell more toner cartridges then I consider their tactics dispicable. In any case I will pay a little more next time and avoid the brother brand on principle.

I suggest you avoid this one….but if you buy, be sure to have replacement toner cartridges handy….or some electrical tape. “BUY NOW”
